Using 21st Century Resources to Enhance Math, Teaching & Learning

In viewing this webinar, its focus was using two on line applications for elementary school students in grades k-6.  These two applications;  CYBERCHASE in the Elementary classroom and VITAL( video in teaching and learning) are two online tools that enable students and teachers to teach and have fun learning in math.

In the world of  CYBERCHASE, the dastardly villain Hacker is on a made mission to take over cyberspace with the help of his blundering henchbots Buzz and Delete.  But heroes Jackie and Matt are curious kids that are set out to stop him with the aide and help of their most powerful weapon , brainpower.  Each  level of the math adventure takes students on a thrilling math adventure that is driven by different math concepts.  The mission is to develop and sustain different math concepts and problem solving skills.  Cyberspace also helps teacher bring resources to the classroom, in a fun context to learn math. As a teaching tool it teaches students that math is everywhere, you can be good at it.  Each episode also has a live action segment following the animated episode, showing how students learning math can solve real life problems.

The philosophy of cyberspace is to show students that math is every where and everyone can be good at it.  The program and supporting activities have been designed to support math curriculum in education and to reflect standards in math.  It is meant to foster enthusiasm, model ma thematic reasoning, improve problem solving skills and to equip students with an attitude to approach math with confidence and a positive attitude.

VITAL(videos in teaching and learning) is a web-based  learning environment.  First it enables students to view, analyze and communicate ideas with videos. Secondly it is vital web site for teacher resource for media  and lesson plans.  It contains over 125 sites for lesson plans and over 2000 sites for resources..  It is organized in to topics and sub-topics with a list of resources, one of them being cyberspace.  It suggests what videos to use in the classroom, follow up suggestions, it correlates to standard text books and to standards in curriculum.  Lesson plans are designed to be short and simple.  They contain a six step process that have assessments and handouts.

With these two resources you can bring math adventures into the classroom and keep learning fun.  Students can use both their imagination and real world problem solving into the classroom.

The question at hand of integrating technology in to the classroom should not take to much  thought or deliberation to come to an informed decision.  In this current environment of educational needs and the push for students to meet state and government standards, the need for technology to be Incorporated in to every day learning is at a all time high. With Countries like  China and Germany far exceeding the United States in their ability to teach with technology, excelling their students academics and capabilities,  leaves  students in the United States at an extreme disadvantage.
Training teachers as well as students to use technology in the classroom can improve and help excel the learning process and help develop a collaborative school environment.  Technology can make lessons much more interesting for students.  Technology makes  things visual and interactive, so much more interesting than just listening to a lecture.  Interactive lessons on a smart board give you the opportunity to play and learn.  Students like to be active and doing something, and this enables you as the teacher to capture all of the students attention and the results of understanding the lesson at hand is much greater.  Teachers can be enabled to use the Internet to develop, design, and create new and interesting lesson plans.  Administers can now keep complete, up to date digital records of students.  Technology helps create a competitive edged in the education process, we live in the year 2012, we should be embracing and empowering our teachers and students to utilizes as much of the technology that we have access to.  Students who currently utilize the technology that we have available, such as power points, flash drives the Internet and other methods, have a greater advantage both academically and career wise, than students who do not have access to technology.  This is one of the many reasons that state and school educational should collaboratively work to get all schools up to the 21st century, in terms of acquiring and utilizing technology in their classroom settings..  With the announcement on Thursday, September 21st from Microsoft, stating it is launching an initiative called  Youth Spark, where it plans to invest over $ 500 million dollars.  Over the next three years, Youth Sparks aims to  create  education, employment and entrepreneurship to over 300 million youth in over 100 countries.   This is one way Microsoft will assist in lessening the divide between students who have access to  technology and for those who do not access.  It is important that if we want our teachers and students to remain in the 21st century of learning and education, we must continue to pursue and acquire technology for our classroom and the advancement of education.

I was born in the mid-west in Topeka Kanas and moved to NH when I was five years old. I have stayed in NH since that time, living in different parts of the state, but have resided in Concord NH for the past 20 plus years. I have currently worked in the health and human service field for over 30 years, working with adults and children with cognitive, physical, emotional and mental health issues. I am currently looking to expand my knowledge and experience in special education and possible return to teaching or some sort of faculty position that would utilizes my skills and experience. I also have a son who has multiple diagnoses and I would like to increase my knowledge of what is currently happening in the field of education. So as to be a stronger advocate to help meet his needs in his school setting.

Learning about technology will be extremely beneficial both professionally and personally. Professionally it will assist me to develop, design and incorporate the use of technology to assist the individuals I work with to learn skills and develop possibly a system of communication, that meets their needs and increases their ability to be more independent. Also, I would be better able to assist my co-workers to utilize our current technology for more effective teaching and communication. Personally, I will hopefully benefit from this course to increase my own personal skills and overcome the fears I have about technology and also be able to assist my son in further developing and advocate for his own technology needs to increase his knowledge and skills. Technology to me is a big black hole. There is so much to learn on what, how and why to use technology and how it can improve individuals and their lives. Technology is so much a part of everyone’s daily life that it is important that we continue to gain, maintain and develop on going current knowledge of technology.
